UPDATE: I have recently changed hosting providers and am rebuilding this site. You will notice that the blog sections are missing - I hope to have these up-and-running again soon.
This site is a hobby that has struggled to find its place on the world wide web stage. I write it myself in a text editor and it is as much an exercise in learning for me as it is a soapbox for me to preach my views on the world.
This is tough. The site has now been on the web (in various incarnations) for some time. It is so tempting to try and put everything that interests me on this site and lose all semblance of coherency. What I would like this to become is:
- Free software When someone mentions things like Free software, Gnu/Linux or open source, people have a tendency to smile and think about the most polite way to excuse themselves. While that may be so, there do seem to be some out there who are interested but don't want to look like an idiot in front of the computer guru who casually drops ten acronyms into each sentence. The truth is that these things aren't just for computer experts; it's just the expert-wannabes like to hide their ignorance behind a puff of jargon. There are a lot of things I don't know, but with any luck I can point you in some good directions and fill what I see as a gap in Internet. There are also a lot of ways that non-geeks can help the Free software movement, but they can be very hard for non-geeks to find. I would also like to address some of the more ideological issues around the topic.
- Encryption This is a topic that most people restrict to spies and paranoid basket-cases. Whether you feel you need to justify your interest by referring to the woman in a highly-censored country who would be killed if her emails were encrypted, or simply on the premise that individuals should be asked before there information is read, I hope to provide simple guides for you to become involved.
- Peering You will not find this topic addressed on this site at the moment. In fact, you will not find it addressed on many sites. In the meantime, please take a look at http://www.citylink.co.nz/community/peering.html.
Please don't give up on me, have a look around but make sure you come back when things are up and running properly.
